In ancient times, there lived a powerful cosmic being known as VaastuPurush. He was born during a great cosmic event when the universe was being created. VaastuPurush was enormous in size and extremely energetic. Due to his immense hunger, he began to grow larger and started troubling the gods by blocking their paths and disturbing the balance of the universe.
Worried by his uncontrolled power, the gods approached Lord Brahma for help. Lord Brahma, along with other deities such as Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, Indra, Varuna, and Kubera, decided to control VaastuPurush to restore harmony.
Together, the gods overpowered VaastuPurush and pressed him down onto the earth. VaastuPurush fell flat on the ground, lying face down with his head towards the northeast and feet towards the southwest. Each god occupied a specific part of his body to keep him under control. This fixed position became known as the VaastuPurush Mandala.
Realizing his mistake, VaastuPurush prayed to Lord Brahma for forgiveness. Pleased by his devotion, Lord Brahma blessed him. Instead of punishing him, Brahma declared that VaastuPurush would become the guardian of all buildings. He said that anyone who constructed a house or building while respecting VaastuPurush and the gods placed on his body would be blessed with peace, health, and prosperity.
Since then, VaastuPurush is believed to reside in every plot of land. This is why Vastu Shastra emphasizes proper directions and layout before constructing any building, so that VaastuPurush is not disturbed and harmony is maintained.
Moral of the Story
The story of VaastuPurush teaches us the importance of balance, respect for nature, and harmony between human life and cosmic forces.
